My physical health regime, part 1

It dawned on me the other day that I have now been actively managing my health and fitness for ten years, yep ten bloody years, and it has not even felt like four.

 

Like most Australian guys I like a beer (well several beers at times) and during my late teens and early 20's this was a regular occurrence. This, coupled with lots of convenient pub meals, poor food choices an overall poor diet led to a bit of a gut and not feeling as healthy as a 20 something should.

 

It was not until I recently saw my wedding photo from 2006 that I noticed how much better I look and feel now after ten years of looking after myself properly. I may be exactly the same weight, 80kgs, but the difference is really noticeable which is best attributed to losing fat and gaining muscle through working out, cardio and most importantly diet.

 

To be clear I am obviously not a health and fitness professional or qualified in anyway, I just know what has worked for me and maybe this will work for you also.

 

So in 2007 a work colleague who had many years of gym experience up his sleeve said why not come and give an early morning session a go. My first reaction, 'are you crazy' as at that time I loved a sleep in. Negative thoughts aside I went and I really enjoyed it. I realised that I liked being up before everyone else which gave me a feeling of opportunity and advantage that I was up before my competitors, not actual competitors but getting it done before the majority of society, it sounds dumb I know.

 

After the first workout, the very first one I immediately had better energy that day even though I woke up at 5am (to be truthful I did go to bed early the night before but I also work up at like 4am as I was excited to try this gym thing out). Now the early mornings re part of my DNA and I can no longer physically sleep in, I am just up and at them every day even on non gym days.

 

As I got into a routine and my gym buddy educated me on diet (I will cover this in a future blog post) I noticed my body start to change for the better. My stomach toned up and I gradually got improved muscle definition. These were all very pleasing signs which kept my motivation at a high level to train hard and always aim for a personal best.

 

What does all of this mean and why should you care? well I can honestly say that I am much fitter, healthy, younger looking (people tell me) and overall happier ever since I became obsessed with my physical health. I have so much more energy now and I look back at my wedding photo and think how much I have improved myself.

 

I believe that we should all strive to be the best person that we can be and this includes much more than just physical appearance and health, but these are very important for overall health and happiness in my view. I recommend you think about how you are travelling and if you are not happy for whatever reason do something different than you usually would, go for a walk or run, try out at a gym and see how it feels for yourself.

 

In Part 2 of this story I will focus on my specific workout routine with some do's and dont's that I have learnt over the years.
